Rain was in the forecast but our volunteers were dedicated to this project and we had a wonderful turnout.  It was a little chilly so we kept on moving.  Some of our new volunteers shared how much they enjoyed working on Ms. Barnes home.

So come out this Saturday and join us for some R & R (Repair and Restore)!

Home Owner:  Clady Barnes
Address: 4010 Waldo, Texas 77063-9963
Key Map: 530B

    BEFORE               DURING

Mrs. Barnes is a 78 year old very nice lady. She has lived here for 48 long and wonderful years.  She enjoys church and, as the congregation's oldest member, she has been named "Mother of the Church".  She moves a little slower these days but her daughter Yvonne is there to help her.

So much progress has been made on our first work day!  She has a wonderful shady front yard but it was over grown BEFORE...
...And AFTER...Wow!  What a difference... Yvonne was telling us how Ms. Barnes used to enjoy sitting at her little stone table.  Wouldn't it be great if we could clean it up? Here's how a little dream and a labor of love can turn an overgrown fence along the driveway into a nice little flower garden.  But our volunteers didn't stop there! Let's weed the flower bed in front of the hedges too.

The drive way that went on forever now reaches even further .

We still need to haul off this torn car cover but the two big old tires are already gone.

Ms. Barnes was worried about snakes and bugs in her back yard because of this huge tree that split and fell during a storm (two very large sections).
EVEN THOUGH it wasn't on the work order volunteers worked diligently to remove as much as humanly possible.
Removing the big tree revealed some others on the opposite side of the yard but volunteers took care of that too. Y'all are awesome!
Check out how much space is in the back now!

You can see just how big of a task it was by looking at these pictures of the limbs waiting for heavy trash pick up by the city.
Our crew leaders and Ms. Barnes are extremely impressed.  Thanks guys and gals!

According to our carpenters there isn't any paneling or sheetrock on the inside walls so power washing the aluminum siding is out of the question.  We'll have to use good old fashioned elbow grease (metaphorically speaking of course) - meaning manual labor, lots of soap, scrub brushes and water.

Most of the wood siding (T1-11) has been replaced.

Some times when we remove the old wood we find that there is nothing left to nail the new wood to so we have to improvise...

SIDING BEFORE... ...AFTER one day and a bunch of heart felt labor...

The make shift "lip" transitioning from the aluminum siding to the T1-11 which is being replaced.  Large nails that were sticking out have been removed.

Some windows need trim installed, and others have no trim.

Siding was missing on the eave so we covered the exposed wood to prevent weather damage and bugs from building nests in the holes.

The porch was green so we primed it and painted it crimson red.

There is a broken window pane on the front to replace.  Corner trim on the front and back will be replaced.  This siding on the eave looks much better now since we reshaped it and secured it.

Her screen door has about had it but she didn't want a new wooden one so Mary Ann rolled in some new screen for her.

Yvonne (daughter) told us that when it rains the back by the driveway floods. The left side of the ramp has bricks that were set in concrete and it would be great if we could get some volunteers to lay some concrete and set bricks on the right side too.  There are some extra bricks in a pile by the fence.

Vines on the north side are growing onto the siding.  IF we can't power wash this side to clear them we'll need to manually remove them and then wash the siding.

There isn't much space between the house and this fence.
There may be some poison oak or ivy along the fence so we will hang plastic tarps to block volunteers from plants in and on the fence line.

Please do not work near this side if you are susceptible to either of this itchy skin conditions.

As you can tell, there is something to do for everyone... even Mary who spent most of the day taking photos that we'll post to the web later.  Thanks Mary.

Two of Your Fearless Leaders

Victor Cavazos and Mary Ann Smith

We'll capture Paul on the 21st!

Be sure to let Victor or Paul know if you are scheduled to work the 21st and can't make it.  Be sure to introduce yourself to someone new. You might just recognize a voice and finally meet the person from the other side of the phone. We would like this to be a 2 workday project and need all the help we can get. Your leaders really think you are awesome and appreciate your help!

Work safe and have fun. See you on the 21st.
